First week report on Hope’s house, 02/25/2007, from Perry Miller

Many of you have been following the progress of Hope's house on Maple Grove's website and were able to follow the progress daily.

Monday Morning we started with concrete foundation and by Thursday noon everything in this first phase was completed. In between that time, the work consisted of building the house, completing the exterior with siding, two porches and vinyl porch railing and paint the entire exterior the final coat including the steel doors.

Inside the house the electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning has been installed along with all the insulation walls, floor and ceiling’s and on Friday morning the Drywall was delivered and stocked in the house.

I sent a report to the MDS office listing the names of all the volunteer’s I counted 37 people. This week was just awesome as we worked together, the spirit, and the cooperation of this group is surely what leads to the success of building Hopes house.

It was great to see the relationship grow with Hope and her families with everyone throughout the week after a shy encounter of 38 verses 5 you can imagine how you yourself might have felt, maybe a little intimidated, why they are doing this, are they going to do a good job.

On Thursday afternoon after the house was done some left for home and a large group went to Grand Isle to do a little sight seeing. I received a call from the chief of the Chitimacha Tribe .Randy lives in Baton Rouge and had been following the progress also on Maple Groves website and was just amazed by what he saw and wanted to convey his thanks to all the Volunteers. I invited Randy to stop by and meet this group and he surprised us by jumping in his car and driving 2 hours, eating a meal with us and participating in our sharing time around the campfire. Randy said that before he stopped at our camp site ,he went straight to the house drove up to it, got out and touched it, he said he wanted to make sure that it was not just some photo enhancement and that there really was a house.

I am sorry that 12 people had already left and did not get to meet Randy and hear him share about the Chitimacha tribe and to hear him thank each person for giving up a week to come down and work on Hope’s house. Hope and Inez were also so disappointed on Friday that everyone had left and they did not get a chance to hug each of you and convey their thanks. I know they thanked many of you throughout the week and would make the comment that they simply did not have the words to describe how the felt.

On Friday Afternoon we spent some time in their Fema Trailer as Hope was making Crab caked for us. It was unbelievable how they live with five in this trailer. Inez has a sewing machine set up and was sitting there working piles of clothes and Tupperware containers with their personnel belongings and Quilt blocks that Inez has made. Inez went and got the comforter that you made for here and was asking questions to Betty who made those and kept going on about the flannel that was so good and soft and how she can not find flannel like that. Inez followed Betty to the car and with tears in her eyes said that we will never know what this means to them.

They told me to thank everyone for them, for the funds that you gave and by giving of your time.

I just want to again comment on the great job everyone did this week what a great group of people , including all those that did all the planning and material lists. For those that were there know that we only needed to run after a few items to keep the project going , and that is the result of the work by Dan Dutcher, Scott Sommers, Joe Weaver, John Raber and Randy Coblentz.

Thanks to everyone.

THANK-YOU
Thank you to the adults, young adults and to the youth and their sponsors for the good work of painting the siding and staining the wood for the Shelter for Life home. Your willingness to participate in the production of the Billiot home is greatly appreciated!

Fundraising and Cost Update
We currently have $41,219 raised for the Hope and Inez house fund. This includes $6,129 carried over in Missions from 2006 designated for this project. The $41,219 figure does not include any of the $12,500 that was in the Mission budget for this project. Project costs are presently at $39,678. This figure may change slightly, however, we feel this is very close to the final numbers with only a few variables to work out.

PRAY
Thank you for your support of this project with your generous gifts, prayers and commitments to go and work on this project. Please continue to keep Hope and her family in your prayers along with the group that is going to Louisiana.
